The TJP OilKiller is a special boat designed for cleaning and maintenance of closed or under coast water mirrors as: docks, marinas, waterfront, along the lake, navigable channels, the channel ports, bays, private areas of major hotels, resorts and tourist villages.
The TJP OilKiller is based on the patented disposal FLOC (FLexible Oil Collector – pat. EP2675697B1).
The TJP has in project a whole range of Oil Skimmers for heavy employments to light ones, from Oil Spill Response in disaster theatres to cleaning and maintenance of water mirrors and the OilKiller is the first and smallest model among the devices of the expected range.
The TJP patents are aimed at the realization of devices that provide a response to the need to improve the efficiency of the reclamation in the sea with interception and collection of the free surface of water mirrors.




The vessel is built with several elements made in fiberglass from MDF molds obtained with the milling technique. They are sought simple geometries with the purpose to reduce the number of parts to ensure maximum simplicity and safety of assembly.

The correct sizing (compliant with regulations UNI EN ISO 12215) and the choice of the most suitable materials provide the necessary structural strength, the weight reduction and a favorable cost/benefit ratio, also thanks to the sandwich construction.
The sandwich consists of a core of lightweight and incompressible material with the two faces, said skins, made of composite material.


They have been chosen two types of materials:

–  COREMAT,  for the internal side that is less stressed;

–  TERMANTO,  for the bottom, the deck and the outer side that are more stressed.


They have been chosen various kinds of fabrics depending on the stress amount with which they have to work:
–  COMBIMAT: a fabric with optimal mechanical properties, with large weft, to be used as final layer;
–  MAT: felts for isotropic reinforcement with multi-directional orientation of the fibers, with equal strength in all directions, commonly used for the construction of composite products. It is used in different weights: first lighter to avoid marking the surface and to better follow the forms, therefore heavier until reaching the thickness or the desired resistance.
–  GELCOAT: sheets of various nature (glass, carbon, etc.) impregnated with resin and used to obtain a bright external finish, with the desired color, free of defects and weather, ultraviolet rays and water resistant.


It has been given particular attention to the overlap of the different materials in correspondence of fittings and joint areas, to have the best performance and quality of the final result.

The Intuition

it is about a device able to intercept and collect oily pollutant floating on the surface of seas, lakes and rivers. The device is simple, scalable, easy to be used and very effective. It is under protection of the European Patent # EP2675697B1.

FLexible Oil Collector

it is the device’s name, with the acronym FLOC.
FLOC performs the function of intercepting the water and pollutant surface film and to convey it towards a picking up zone. The taking up can be accomplished both with innovative TJP DracOil device as well as with traditional systems such as: oleophilic disks/rollers/brushes, weir skimmers, adduction by pipe on board support ships equipped with decantation tanks or DracOil filter-tanks.




it is a flat funnel designed to generate inside itself a balanced stream in which the inlet flow is the same amount of the sum of outlet flows and this because of the the movement and the auxiliary systems.
The main characteristics are:

  • an inlet mouth with adjustable draft to dissect and incorporate a surface film of the liquid mass
  • a tapered shape in plan and ascending side section
  • a balanced stream inside itself
  • a separating baffle of the free surface of the liquid mass
  • an outlet discharge of the deep mass of water, may be equipped with an exctractive propeller
  • an accumulation area of the intercepted free water surface

FLOC performs the following functions:

  • intercepts the surface film “F”
  • separates “F” in the two flows “FR” e “FS”
  • conveys “FR” toward the pickup area
  • discharges “FS” in deepness

Potential use of the FLOC




FLOC focuses at the aft the mixture of water and oil and sends it inside the DracOil for the stages of filtration and storage,







or the mixture is pumped on board a support ship where a separation system is installed,









or is let drop inside a weir skimmer,









or passes through the discs of an oleophilic skimmer.





Evolution of the TJP Design



Intuition comes out from the observation of the action taken on spill responses in:

The goal was to find out a “system” that would allow rapid and enough effective responses and, in particular, the attention was focused on the development of events on the River Lambro.

beelotThe BeeLot comprise the existence of a River Po consortium of owners of barges that, having changed them with suitable coupling systems, could turn very quickly in suitable response to provide the first aid in case of spills in the river and its tributaries.

The next disaster in the Gulf of Mexico highlighted even more the inefficiency of the systems and the means used and the need for interventions aimed to recover huge quantities of pollutant. The idea of the mouth of the BeeLot was thus transformed into a huge plate funnel, able to float and FLOC Convoytowed by tugs within the patches to be reclaimed: The FLOC Convoy. The collected and intercepted pollutant would have to be pumped on board tankers and then to the following separation by centrifuge and storage in the tanks of the ships. The first scale model of that flat funnel was created and tested in the towing tank of the University of Trieste and the result of those tests has been the cause of the continuation of the development of the original idea.

The mouth device thought to be mounted on barges to collect pollutant has become so FLOC, a flat funnel, and its positioning in front of the bow of the barges has given the pattern for the architecture of OilKiller, the boat that houses and manages FLOC.


The next steps were driven by the decision to start a verification process of the chance to transform an idea into a business, and thus the subsequent and more thorough analysis of existing markets, the potential customers and the possible new markets.

We oriented our attention to the prevention and maintenance markets this due to the facts that disasters are neither predictable nor desirable and to keep sustainable the costs of research and development. In addition the studies we have done about the oil spills, both large and small, have illuminated us about some innovative filtration and storage systems.TJP Oil Killer

The size of the device have been thus greatly reduced and the concepts of self-propelling and self-sufficiency have taken consistency. New models have been made and tests have been continued in the towing tank. New markets have been hypothesized and for each of them have been imagined a specific product.

The patroller skimmer driven by a sailor and equipped with a filtering and storage system with totally clean operating cycle (as for all the TJP devices).








The wire driven skimmer for oil spill response work: it is lowered into the sea from a support ship, it is driven with a cable from the bridge of the ship and the water and pollutant mixture is pumped on board to be treated and stored.

The patroller robot for cleaning, maintenance and alarm activities within restricted areas of activities at risk such as refineries, coastal depots, oil terminals and offshore platforms. The device provides for the use of electric motors powered by lithium batteries, the capacity of self recharging of the batteries, a station for continuous hydro-analysis, a computerized program of work, the ability of alarm and emergency, the ability of auto signaling of itself to third ships and implementation of emergency routes.

The emergency device with which to equip commercial vessels in order to provide them with the ability to clean up their accidental spills and/or respond with intervention in case of found at sea of third party accidental spills.






A device for maintenance, cleaning, patrolling and anti-intrusion alarm for areas with a high standard of welfare.





Along the way we also came across some operators need to collect floating solids, algae and mucilage; so we have analyzed in detail the muciskimmer01-render01problems which arose and the possible solutions. At the moment there is possible to fulfill that task but we have had some ideas that could give good results but there is also the need to pass through deep studies of an innovative Venturi pump. We will, in the future!



And so we come to the definition of the “concept” from which to design “OilKiller”, our first industrial prototype.

We have created a special real model to validate the numerical flow virtual simulations; we verified FLOC and modified the vessel’s hull in order to make it more stable on the water surface. The latter operation resulted in the elimination of the floating tubular means in favor of submerged floating systems SWAT type. Subsequently to the awareness that the industrial prototype has also to be our first demonstrator, it was decided to size it so that it was easy to transport and trailerable.

In summary:

The device “TJP OilKiller” is efficient and effective in intercepting and collecting the free surface of a water mass.

FLOC (FLexible Oil Collector) is a flat funnel under European Patent (EP2675697B1), invention of TJP, which thanks to its shape intercepts and collects the water surface with the above it floating pollutants.

“TJP OilKiller” is the industrial prototype of a boat for cleaning and maintenance of narrow mirrors of water, such as docks, marinas, waterfront, lakeside etc.

The reasons for this choice depends on:
1) the continuity of the maintenance market against the occasional and undesirable catastrophic events
2) the absence of an offer specifically aimed at cleaning and maintenance
3) by the interest shown by potential users of a similar device
4) the perception of the possibility of programming sales and therefore production and financial management

OilKiller is the first result of the process of development and optimization of an idea born in response to the need to improve the efficiency of remediation of oil spills at sea.
